- STS research has devoted relatively little attention to how non-scientific actors and institutions promote and receive science and technology, leaving under-theorized the relationship between technoscience and political power. This article introduces the concept of “sociotechnical imaginaries” and, through a comparative analysis of nuclear power in the United States and South Korea, shows how different nationally stabilized visions of nuclear futures — a technology to be contained and responsibly regulated in the US versus “atoms for development” in South Korea — have supported divergent policy trajectories and responses to nuclear shocks such as Three Mile Island, Chernobyl and anti-nuclear mobilizations.
